Thieves Kids target local get businesses

Thieves were so neat and fast when they removed large shopfront windows to steal $8500 worth of equipment from two Richmond businesses, the robberies went unnoticed by security guards and staff. About $2500 worth of electrical equipment was stolen from BNT in Richmond on June 24 and three days later a $6500 motorcycle was stolen from Morley Motorcycle and Marine in Wakatu Estate in Stoke. The burglars gained entry to both businesses by removing a shopfront window and Morley’s managing director Ian Robinson says the burglars were so tidy, staff and customers didn’t notice anything was wrong until two days later. “The alarm went off at 4.23 in the morning and our security company was there four minutes later but they didn’t notice anything obvious was wrong,” Ian says. “I went to

We even had to point out the missing window to the police when they arrived.” Ian says the 1.8 metre wide by 0.8 metre high window was hidden behind some trees next to their building. “It would be quite a mission to

Well, children from the Richmond Early Learning Centre have been getting their weekly “school time” swimming lessons in a year early, partnering-up with the ASB Aquatic and Fitness Centre’s Swim

Lisa Stove, the Nelson region coordinator for Swim Magic, says Water Safety New Zealand statistics show that there are still huge numbers of intermediate-age children who can’t swim 200m, and she hopes getting them in early will go a long way to improving those statistics. Most of the schools in the region have regular swimming lessons at

the facility, but this is the first time that children from early childhood education have joined up. “Our catchphrase is that it takes a long time for a child to learn their ABCs, well it takes just as long to learn to swim to save yourself,” says Lisa. “We just want to start their water confidence early. There’s no best age to start swimming, it’s just as early as possible, it’s all about water familiarisation.”

They obviously had the right tools and knew what they were doing.” BNT shop supervisor, Ben Luff says he arrived at work at 7.30 on Friday morning but didn’t initially notice their shop window was missing. “A truck rolled past the front door and I thought “that sounds loud” and that’s when I noticed the window,” he says. Ben says the only good news is that the burglars didn’t damage the 1 metre by 1.5 metre glass and it will be able to be reused.

“They’d picked all the rubber out and removed the flashings and lifted the window out and leaned it against the building. It’s a big-sized piece of glass so they obviously had some glazier’s tools and the right skills.” Ben says the thieves were also audacious because BNT’s shop front is well illuminated and visible from Oxford St. Nelson police are investigating the burglaries and would like to hear from anyone who has any relevant information. The stolen motorcycle is a 2012 Honda CRF 150cc dirt bike.

Dog jumps on learner driver, causing crash

A dog jumped on to the lap of a 16 year old driver, frightening her, as she crashed into a power pole. Rosette Hailes-Paku, who has only had her learner’s licence for two weeks, was driving down Champion Rd to her new home with her mother, 11 year old sister and their pet dog, late on Thursday afternoon. Rosette says the dog jumped “on top of me” from the back seat, before the van hit the curb and slammed front-on into a power pole, damaging it, cutting power to the neighbourhood for hours, and putting her

Glass removed from pub patron’s eye Staff at the Star & Garter are deeply upset after a woman, who is one of their regulars, was seriously injured during an incident at the Richmond tavern early on Sunday morning. Nelson Police say the woman suffered a serious eye injury when a member of a group that had been ejected from the tavern on Queen St, at about 3am on Sunday, threw a glass object at the tavern’s smoking area.

The glass object shattered and a shard flew into the eye of the woman sitting in the area. The woman was admitted to Nelson Hospital where she had surgery to remove the glass and was reported to be in a stable condition on Monday. “She is a regular here and we are really concerned about her welfare,” Star & Garter general manager Jerome Nahi says. “She

Brightwater School hosts its own Games Brightwater School pupils didn’t need to go to Glasgow to experience the colour and excitement of the Commonwealth Games, after competing in their own games complete an opening ceremony featuring kilted pipers, Scottish Highland terriers and a visit from the Queen. Last Friday’s Brightwater games started with kilted pipers, former pupils Rachel Shaw and Matthew Arnold, leading a procession of athletes dressed in the colours of 20 of the Commonwealth countries onto the school’s playing field. Scammed out of $250,000

A Nelson woman has been conned out of $250,000 in an online friendship that turned out to be a scam. It’s the latest in the long, and increasing, line of Nelson people who are falling victim to online scammers, mainly via dating or companion websites. Age Concern Nelson manager Sue Tilby says the problem has been growing over the past year, as trusting older people get more and more computer-savvy. Sue says the quarter of a million dollar rip-off is the biggest she has heard of locally and that it took place over a year, with the amounts the victim sent growing over time. “The person was in denial and has still not totally accepted that it was a scam.” Loneliness is a common factor in the cases Age Concern has dealt with and Sue says older people tend to be more trusting, so are open to scammers. “Older people tend to think that the computer is a trustworthy piece of equipment. It’s quite sad because we want them to get computer savvy because it’s an extension of life, but this is one of the down sides.” Nelson internet safety expert John Parsons, says he’s not surprised as he’s also dealt with an increasing number of cases where scammers are fooling locals. In one case he worked on, a Nelson woman sent $28,000 to a scammer offshore. “When I met her she was on the verge of losing $100,000. By the end of working with that family we had to reformat the computers, had to change the land line and we had to give her another cellphone. In response to the increasing number of victims, Age Concern Nelson is hosting a seminar this month called Scam Savvy. It’s aimed at educating people around online scams and will be held at Trafalgar Pavilion. Age Concern are hoping for around 120 attendees to listen to Bronwyn Groot on August 21 from 1.30pm.

A rare collection of medals, given to the family of a private after he died in World War 2, will be up for auction next weekend. The medals currently belong to the sister of Nelson soldier G.C O’Connor, and will be sold along with a portrait of himself, a watch, his will and a letter he wrote to his family during the war. Included amongst the medals is a Distinguished Flying Cross, which is awarded to junior officers and senior non commissioned officers of the Air Force for courage and devotion to duty. More than 1000 of the these medals were awarded to New Zealanders for their actions during the Second World War. Auctioneer John Walker says the collection is an important part of Nelson’s history, and while he was reluctant to sell such items – as it’s usually encouraged to pass them down the family line – he says the sister does not have any family to pass them down to. “What makes the collection valuable is the rest of the story. This is the first time I’ve come across a complete collection of his medals, his watch and all of his documentation,” he says. “You’d normally just get one medal, or

Stirling Sports moves to mall

After 14 years of business on Queen St, Stirling Sports has closed its doors and will soon reopen in the Richmond Mall. Owners Dave and Sandy Heyward have decided to “simplify” the business, and will focus more on retail, dropping their fishing and hunting lines. “We just want to concentrate on the Stirling Sports side, which is your footwear, clothing and sport side,” says Sandy. “The type of customer that shops in a traditional Stirling Sports store are mall shoppers, so that’s where we want to be. That’s where our market is.”

The new look store, situated around Michael Hill Jeweller in the mall, will also have more lines, including Adidas Original and Lorna Jane. Both Dave and Sandy will be based in the Nelson store on Trafalgar St, which they also own, in between the closure of the Queen St store and the opening of the Richmond Mall premises. A trio of trail blazing contractors have been busy donating their time and machinery to help create mountainbike tracks around the Nelson-Tasman region, and they could get even busier with an ambitious project to build epic back-country trails on the horizon. Last week, Andrew Spittal of Ching Contracting and Gary Donaldson of Donaldson Civil completed the second stage of the Escalator mountainbike track in the Richmond Hills for the Tasman District Council. Andrew and Gary spent two weeks in diggers working with Chris Mildon of the Mountainbike Trails Trust cutting the 2.5 kilometre climbing track that links with the first stage starting in Easby Park. At the same time, Malcolm Edridge of Mike Edridge Contracting has been working on the new Big Bush mountainbike trails near St Arnaud. All three contractors are providing their excavators and time for free and Chris says that’s reduced the cost of building the tracks by about 80 per cent. “If we didn’t have these guys then a lot of these tracks probably wouldn’t get built,’

Chris says. “Andrew and Gary supplied two diggers, a hydraulic rock breaker and fuel and their time in the Richmond Hills and Malcolm has machinery and some of his staff working at St Arnaud, the generosity is amazing.” Chris says Andrew started the philanthropy ball rolling when he worked on tracks in the Kaiteriteri Mountainbike Park a few years ago. Andrew subsequently worked on tracks around Nelson and now Gary and Malcolm are helping out. All three are executive members of the Nelson Marlborough Contractors Federation and keen mountainbikers. “I’ve been doing it for a few years now, and one day Gary

said he’d come and give me a hand, and now Malcolm’s got on board too,” Andrew says. “We are all contractors and we like to build things that people can use - it’s good for us to be able to do something for the community. I enjoy doing it and it’s so addictive.” Malcolm says he is happy to help out with the St Arnaud trails because all his family and many of his staff are keen mountainbikers and it benefits the wider community. “I have a young family growing up and they’ll be able to enjoy these tracks in the years to come,” Malcolm says. “We also have a lot of keen mountainbikers on our staff and they are good (excavator) operators so they have been helping out too.”

Tasman District Council reserves officer Steve Richards says Andrew, Gary and Malcolm are “adding such tremendous value to the development of the tracks”. “We are lucky to have them just like we are lucky to have all our volunteers. All these tracks are certainly happening a lot faster with them on board.” The next big mission for the trail blazing contractors could be the Epic Trails Project which aims to build a network of long distance back country rides around the region. All three are trustees of the Mountainbike Trials Trust. Its next target is a loop track from the Hackett Hut to the Starveall Hut through to the Lee Valley.

Retailer ‘expands’ to Stoke

Richmond furniture retailer Lynfords is set to move off Queen St, but is doing so to “expand the business”. After being situated in the Queen St store for the past three and a half years, Lynfords is now shifting to the Robinson’s complex off Main Rd Stoke where its neighbours will include Super Cheap Auto and a local cycle store. Lynfords owner Lindsay Thomason says he is aiming to be settled in to the new premises by the start of November and he’s looking forward to the new challenge. “We simply had to find a bigger building with more space and more carparks,” he says. “We have some wonderful new lines of furniture arriving and we are also introducing some more high-quality product to our customers”. Lindsay says the new location will allow for larger storage and display areas. “We think it’ll be a

Courtesy trailer free loaders Cheeky Nelsonians are using courtesy trailers for more than what they’re intended for, say the businesses that own them. Last month, a customer at Bark Processors in Richmond was photographed buying a trailer-load of bark with a Goldpine courtesy trailer. The photo was shared on social media with the caption: “Don’t think Goldpine would be too stoked.” Goldpine manager John McDonald says it’s disappointing that some of their customers would “abuse the

privilege” of the courtesy trailers. “Obviously it should be from the store to home and back again. Should I become aware of someone doing it, I would certainly be reluctant to let them take one again.” But he says he wouldn’t start chasing people who do it. “We’ve got bigger things to worry about.” Sand and Land owner Nigel Sutton says he once caught someone towing scrap metal in one of his trailers and he “had a word” when he came back. But that’s the worst case he’s seen. “Most people are pretty good.”

YrChoice hopes to be Car Company’s choice A group that gives young teenagers life skills and helps them make informed decisions about their relationships and sexual activity has been nominated for the Car Company Charity Drive competition. YrChoice is a preventative life skills programme that is delivered by trained young adults to year 9 and 10 students in many schools throughout the country. It is managed by the youth charity Family Education Network, and Nelson co-ordinator Lynda Rea says it is presently offered in Waimea College, Nelson College for Girls and Garin College. Lynda says one of the keys to the success of YrChoice is that it is delivered by a male and female young adult. “The students can relate to these people because they are younger and that’s one of the strengths of YrChoice,” Lynda says. “Students aren’t always comfortable talking to teachers and parents about relationships and sex.” Lynda says they have six presenters in the Nelson-Tasman region aged from 18 to 25. The presenters are all trained

Snowboarders won’t have to go far to find snow this Friday, with two tones of crushed ice being dropped into Mapua for the Playhouse Café’s Jib Jam event. Sponsored by Hogey’s Surf, Sealords, Speights Summit and Placemakers Nelson, the Jib Jam gives snowboarders a rare chance to strut their stuff in front of spectators away from the ski field, with a specially built rail constructed in front of a three-metre-high ramp. This year’s event is free, and Nic Roland, owner of the Playhouse Café, says the reason for that is to bring in more spectators and competitors. “I’m just a big snowboarding and skiing fan and I love the mountain. You may be aware that the Government has introduced the Land Transport Amendment Bill to lower the adult driver breath alcohol limit. This Bill creates a new offence for drivers with a breath alcohol level between 251 and 400mcg per litre of breath. The blood alcohol limit for this new offence is 50mg per 100ml of blood (0.05). The new limit will come into effect on December 1. From then drivers detected with a breath alcohol level between 251-400mcg will receive a fine and 50 demerit points. Drivers who accumulate 100 demerit points for any offences within a two year period will receive a three month driver licence suspension. For drivers detected at over 400mcg of alcohol per litre of breath the existing criminal sanctions apply. This new law is great news for Police and the general public. Alcohol contributes to about 30 percent of fatal road crashes. International research shows that lowering the adult drink-driving limit will make a significant impact on reducing road deaths and injury. In New Zealand, we've seen a cultural change around drink-driving and the vast majority of people have got the message that it's not okay to drink and drive. Recent public surveys also indicate that the majority of people consider the current drinkdriving limits to be too high. We all have to take responsibility for the decisions we make when we drive. Having beaten the Stoke Cobras twice in the past two rugby league finals, the Rabbits now face a spirited Tigers team who clawed their way past the Cobras 26-22 in the semi-final on Saturday. Tigers chairman Paul Lafotanoa says it’s a special achievement for the club to be back in the final, and he believes they have every chance to get up over the Rabbits, who saw off the Victory Phoenix Vikings 32-14 in the other semi-final. “I think we’ve got every chance. The Rabbits are the form team, they’re unbeaten this year, but they’ve had a couple of close calls and I believe they’re beatable,” he says. “The Tigers will have to step up another level from their game against Stoke.” The only mark against Richmond’s perfect record is a round-robin draw with the Cobras and their captain Hoani Takao is well aware that they will go into the game as the favourites. “I’d be lying if I said we didn’t feel any pressure. While we know the rest of the season doesn’t matter now that we’re in the finals, we’re confident we can produce a good quality game and we just need to

The Grade 1 matchup between the South Island Secondary Schools Junior Champion Waimea 10A and Garin College was set to be an interesting one. In a match packed with U15 and U17 Nelson age group players it was tightly contested all the way - Waimea eventually taking the spoils 34-29. Basic errors committed by both sides saw the score go up and down like a yo-yo throughout. Waimea, coach Lisa Book, commended her whole team for the win. They stuck together throughout, and played as a unit until the final whistle. Accurate shooting from all parts of the circle by Amiee Book had her defenders at sixes and sevens. Even though the defenders had a difficult time containing Waimea’s offence, Garin coach, Sarah Rankin praised her circle defenders Kate Hand and Sarah Robinson, saying they improved throughout the game. They picked up vital ball to give their team the extra opportunities to mount a third quarter come back - going into the final stanza only one goal in arrears. Both coaches were impressed by their respective goal attacks Poppy Restieaux (Garin) and Demi Woolley (Waimea). Their

The fishing around Nelson has been on the slow side for a while now with snapper moving to the deeper water over winter. There is still the odd big moocher hanging around for those keen enough to put the time in will get rewarded. Good gurnard can be found in Delaware Bay and out wide in Tasman Bay now. Don’t forget to set your flounder net around the estuaries and inlets as good numbers are also showing up. Reports of Blue Cod appearing along the Boulder Bank shows that they are probably moving out of the marine reserve due to an increase in numbers and there have been a few takeable Brim caught in the same proximity. Scallops in Okiwi are in pretty good condition and in reasonably good numbers in Okiwi and Ketu Bays. While the season is still early the signs are good for the rest of the season as they put on some meat weight over the next month or so. Good size Blue Cod have been in abundance around D’urville and some nice snapper have been landed. Nile head has been producing 3-5lb snapper in deeper water. The Kingies are still about but can be a bit elusive at times and patience is required.

Last thing to remember is to get your boat serviced now before the spring rush as its only 8 weeks before the snapper will be back. With the cold, wet and wintry days this is the perfect time to thoroughly inspect and carry out some maintenance on your boat trailer. This will extend its life and help promote trouble-free boating. • Obvious items include checking tyre pressures; looking for signs of rust, wear and damage; checking and cleaning lights and reflectors regularly; and lubricating the tow coupling, winch bushes, gears and brake mechanisms. • Salt water and salt-laden air are a trailer’s biggest enemies, and even though your trailer is galvanised, corrosion can still occur. • Periodic washing down, drying and then spraying the leaf springs will help prolong their life. • Wheel bearings should be checked and regreased at least twice a year, and replaced if worn – a DIY task. Wash your trailer on a regular basis with a solution of warm water and detergent. The inside of the chassis and cross members can be cleaned out by putting a hose into the drain holes and flushing out. This will help ensure your trailer is set to go for the start of the season.

Application Reference No: RM140540: Proposed Lee Valley Community Dam Resource consents are being sought to allow the construction, operation and maintenance of a dam and associated infrastructure on the Lee River in Tasman District, as part of the Waimea Water Augmentation Project. The application includes creation of a reservoir behind the dam, and discharge of that water from the reservoir for downstream flow augmentation purposes. Resource consents for the take and discharge of water for construction purposes are also sought. A small scale hydroelectric power generation plant at the dam is included in the proposal. A 10 year term of consent is being sought for activities relating to construction. A maximum consent term of 35 years is being sought for the permanent components of the proposal. The application does not include resource consents for the take and use of water released to the downstream river and groundwater. These consents will be applied for at a later date by the future users of the water and are not part of the Lee Dam application. Submissions due: 4.30 pm on Friday 15 August 2014.
